So this collage is based on “Bouquet of Flowers on a Table” painted by Suzanne Valadon in 1930. I thought it was a Matisse painting when I first saw it but no, it was an artist who I’d never heard of before. Happy to make her acquaintance though. She’s a crackerjack painter.
I spent quite a bit of time on the background of this collage. It’s made from handwritten ledger paper from the 1870s and 1890s. I am drawn to ledger paper, maybe because I spent 10 years of my youth as a bookkeeper in New York City. I wasn’t trained for it, or particularly good with numbers, but I took the job and ran with it. I was in charge of several multi-million dollar real estate loans. I don’t know, it was a weird time.
