1880s railway shares, patterned paper, and chalk paint on ledger paper
This collage uses very special paper, in terms of how I was able to treat it. Its primarily made from 1880s railway shares (that mature far in the future: 1921). The amazing part for me is that the paper is thick enough to take an ink and water wash, and the brown ink is color fast enough not to blur with the ink wash. Most of the old paper that I use doesn’t have these qualities, so I was very lucky to find it.
I love the peacefulness of this piece. Like the other works in the Handwritten Sea series, it’s meant to sit back in a room and blend in to the space. It’s perfect for a bedroom.
